I chose to build muscle and lose fat … I know, it’s hard to both at the same time
. … Now that I think of it, I should have chosen to develop endless cardio. After all, doesn’t improving cardio and losing fat go together?
If you’re a beginner/intermediate, you can definitely lose fat/build muscle simultaneously…
If you’re advanced, it’s much tougher to do.
The most important component to fat loss: WHAT YOU EAT.
yeah choose the endless cardio and it will get you already so much closer to where you want to be. But the cardio of a sprinter that is, not the one of a marathon runner! The sprinters look pretty buf if you ask me. Put it together with MMA training and some High Intensity weight workout, et voila!!
. For myself I will take some time off fighting to improve my ground skills first, and I want to get this endless cardio, I just don’t seem to be getting there. So Eric if you’re reading this?? Tips and tricks please. I have to say that I only took up sprinting recently and did too much of 10K runs, cause mea culpa I’m good at them but it doesn’t improve my fighting condition much, I should reduce them to once a week and get up early before work and do some serious up-hill sprints, what do you think Eric?? Leaving soon for a training period of three to four months to Thailand, the place to be to put your training methods to work and to get into great shape for the coming season, hope to hear you soon, grtz
Drop your 10K runs totally for a period of 3 weeks, do 2-3 sessions of hard intervals per week for 3 weeks (eg. 6-8 reps of 30 sec hard, 30-60 sec easy), then take a 1 week break and do something like my free Crazy 8’s routine for 3-4 weeks…
THEN tell me how you feel.
Hi Alain,
I’m a personal trainer who follows Eric’s blog regularly. Another cool way to up cardio endurance is to train using the HIIT method (High Intensity Interval Training). My clients who train with a jump rope consistently have seen tremendous gains not only in their cardio endurance but also better recruitment of muscles and core because the rope is considered low impacting but at the same time employs good movement patterns, where if your alignment is off the rope gives you instant feedback (you miss) therefore training the body to keep good form with the anaerobic intensity that pushes the system to respond and recover faster.
Here’s what we do:
5 repetitions of 30-60 seconds (for beginners) at a pace of 100 to 140 jump revolutions per minute with the rest period in between double the time you’ve jumped for the 5 repetitions.
I chose to lose fat and get improve my MMA skills. I’ve been outa the game for a little while.
I personally think all of the choices are really approriate to achieveing the goal of being an MMA fighter or potential MMA fighter
Yes, all are important, but if you really look at where you are, you probably have 1 area that will give you the most bang for your buck, then you focus on that, once that’s up, you move to the next area – that’s how you create a plan.
I agree with Tony. It was too hard to pick only 2!
even though i only picked 2 my top 3 picks are the 3 leading right now so i am really looking forward to future forums regarding this stuff. i just have 1 quick question for you eric sorry if its a bit off topic. i used to hit the bag as hard as i could and i never experienced this but about 2 months ago maybe even a bit more i started to experice a sharp pain in my knuckles when punching the bag, especially upercuts and hooks. ive seen doctors and they said rest it and thats its only bruising that will go away in a couple weeks so i left it and they felt fine and i hit the bags full power again the other day now there hurting again. it has been going on for months ive soaked my hands in hot water, im taking glucosamine but nothing seems to work. do u think you know what these pains are coming from and how i can treat or prevent them. letting me know would be extremly helpful
1) Get an x-ray – you never know if there’s a small fracture
2) Make sure you’re taping properly – and maybe add some extra padding around that area and even more beside it – you might have a knuckle that protrudes a lot, so you want to even it out so that you hit the bag with all knuckles as opposed to just 1
thanks eric!
yeah my middle knuckles do seem to be a lot larger than the rest, i got an xray and they havent gotten back to me its been about a month now so im good there, i think your idea should be perfect, better then any advice from the doc!
no problem bro…
and if they haven’t gotten back to you about the xray – call them and harass them until you get your results.
all they have to do is look at the damn thing!
btw the pain is only in my 2 middle knuckles
I chose Cardio and Explosiveness… I am just starting out in MMA, but after just some light sparring I see that when the other guy starts wearing down early I can really take advantage. It’s easier to get into a dominant position and “impose my will” on him. It makes a huge difference… keep up the great work Eric!
My main priority for 2010 is just getting time to train. We just had a baby 6 weeks ago and literally my training went from hero to zero. I used to run 15-20 miles (20-30Km), train MMA X2 and do some auxillary training (swimming, weights) each week.
After baby i didn’t have time to scratch my ass. I decided not to beat myself up over it and instead looked at more time efficent ways of training. I read some sports science and saw there was a case for swapping my 6 mile runs for interval training etc.
Thats why I got Eric’s workout programe as its very time efficent: 30 mins a day (which I do at lunch) and I “treat” myself to a 90 minute MMA class each week. The corrective excercises bit is excellent as I found out I had a lot of imbalances in my body. Its early days yet, but so far so good.
Thanks Eric.
1. Drop body fat percentage significantly, keep or gain lean mass
2. Get more stripes (or even the elusive blue belt..)
